My Cupboard is Overflowing...

I think I have every sippy cup, drink cup, nosy cup, water bottle type thingy in my cupboard. I have spent more money than I want to admit to.  Every time I see a cup at the store I think "THIS IS THE CUP...This is going to work"

Daniel is going to be 5 years old soon.  VERY SOON.  I cannot get this child to drink from a straw.  I cannot get him to drink out of a cup with any type of consistency.  There is a lot of mouth leakage to say the least.

Can you give me any ideas??  Otherwise we are going to continue to have a very big boy drinking from a bottle with great success, but it won't happen at school.  So I need some ideas quick.  And NO a feeding tube is NOT the answer for us at this time.

so when my son was an infant, we breastfed but would do bottle feedings every now and then. but when we went to wean, he forgot how to drink from a bottle. I got one of those Gerber sippy cups with the hard spout and took out the valve to teach him the concept. Eventually I had to move to the soft spout ones because he kept biting pieces of plastic off the hard one. I still sometimes remove the valve if he seems to be working too hard and not getting enough. I also have a few valves where I made the slits bigger so he can get more but not be drowning in it.

I also heard from our speech therapist that they have these honey drink cups with a straw so you squeeze the cup and the drink comes up through the straw. But I've heard those straws are so small that it's hard to get lip closure around it.

is he having trouble with lip closure? is he not sucking well enough?
I searched online sippy cups that resemble bottles and came up with:
Thinkbaby Trainer Cup, Nuby Stage 3 wide neck system training, Nuk Learner cup...
I would imagine a sippy cup with a spout similar to a nipple would be best for transition.
good luck!

my little one is 16 mo old and we are test driving sippy cups as well. so far the best we've had is with the Tilty Cup. we have had lots of leakage with others but for some reason this has worked. i got ours on amazon and it has different flow lids you can order. hth!

Ok, I know you are saying that your son is not using a straw, but have you tried those little cartons of drinks with bendy straws - orange juice and the like? I spent months squeezing them into Smiley's mouth and eventually she got the idea and now she uses a straw herself - she has been diagnosed with severe intellectual and physical disabilities. I agree that you don't want a feeding tube or a big child drinking from a bottle if possible. Best of luck.

I would push the juice boxes too! I must have tried at least 20 plus cups too! I had one from gerber with a soft spout that was the best. It is now discontinued:( I called gerber and complained I was sooo mad!! I finally got him to sip on a straw with a juice box when he was four! I squeezed the box and he also finally got it! Try it every day and I bet he will get it too!

Rubbermaid makes a Juice box type of cup. My 3 year old grandson doesn't drink from any sippy cups either. Luckily we have passed them down to his little sister. While Renzo will not suck on the straw, he will let us squeeze the drink through the straw. Good luck
