American Sign Language

One of Daniel's older sisters has taken sign language courses at college.
The younger one in high school has taken two years of German.
She decided that instead of learning more German to meet her graduation credits , she would like to learn American Sign Language. This isn't a class offered at her school, but it is offered at other night/college classes, that we could pay for.

She went to her counselor to inquiry about how to get the credits to apply towards her grades.
She was told American Sign Language isn't really a "language", and they could not do it.

Not really a language? I beg to differ.
What's your opinion?

WHAT!?! That is infuriating! ASL is absolutely a language and it should be offered in more settings.

Sign language is the universal language...in my opinion. It is the language that everyone can speak with their hands...it knows no nationality:). I think that the counselor needs to rethink what he is saying!!!

My opinion is that that counselor needs some serious educating and a good butt-kicking. Not necessarily in that order, either...

What a terrific video! ASL is a beautiful language.

I wonder if the school board would feel the same way?? Time to go up a level and have the couselor's thoughts re-evaluated!

I don't know if I'd consider it a language, it's a TOOL use in different languages, an American SL person would have a hard time understanding a French SL person, just the same as spoken word. You need to understand the base language to understand SL.

Braille is not a language, it's a type. Though it can take many years to learn... Studies among blind children say fewer then 3% of blind children learn Braille AND some schools for the blind refuse to teach it!!! (You can google all this)...

WHAT?!!? I am pretty sure that my deaf SIL would not agree with that counselor!! I took ASL at the University of California Irvine, it most certainly IS a language.

Good for her for learning!
