Modified Activities

I was talking today with one of Daniel's therapist about wanting to find activities for Daniel to do outside of therapy.

I can't seem to find any. I know when my other kids were younger they were in dance classes or swimming. I for the life of me can't find any that are for special needs kids, or ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, or your first born child (OK maybe I'd give up the first born if I had too! LOL just kidding Caitlin!).

Anyways the therapist said "Oh sure there are...."
so now I am calling on my blogger & computer friends...

What activity do you do with your child that you have had to modify to be able to do it?
I'm looking for idea. I want Daniel to be able to experience everything else that any other child does. He shouldn't have to be penalized because he has special needs.

HI there, I know we are a million miles away but I thought I would share anyway!

Firstly I know exactly what you mean and the importance of our children having social experiences with all types of children, great for everyone.

When Cooper was smaller I use to take him to the local library for story time. I would take his bumbo to sit in and he loved listening to the stories and you could borrow books afterwards. The Librarian who took the session also knew sign language so incorporated this for her singing.

we also did music and movement ( be doing most of the movement part!) this was held at a local community centre. I have heard many churches also have music time.

WE did swimming and gymbaroo too but I found the more physical things harder as Cooper was already so different, and he was getting enough of that through PT etc.

Poor Pep does nothing other than the kinder drop offs and big kid stuff! lol

Hope that helps

Call your local MSU Extension Office (Macomb Co. 586-469-5180, Oakland 248/858-0880)
They have lots of programs.
4-H which will accomidate SPK upto age 26, including therapeutic riding (not hippotherpay but riding with some special equipment and very godo trained volunteers), animal activities, camps, crafts, baking and so much more, many of which are easily adaptable to SPK. They also have parenting classes and play groups. I would also check with your local pool or swimming instructor, because our local swimming instructor offers private lessons to SPK at a good rate. Good luck.

I'm clueless on this one, but I do know that we have a church around here that has a night just for SNKs--singing, meals, etc. I know that Max at lovethatmax.blogspot.com is in a special needs softball league and I've also heard about karate.

Charlie's still small so we go to the playground and swing on the swings and there are a lot of free concerts here that we go to as well.

I have been struggling with this too Melanie. However, since we moved I have found a special needs swim class and special needs bowling! I am so excited for Nathan.
